ABOUT THE PIG

Piggly Wiggly, America's first true self-service grocery store, was founded in Memphis, Tennessee in 1916 by Clarence Saunders.  In grocery stores of that time, shoppers presented their orders to clerks who gathered the goods from the store shelves for them.  Saunders, a flamboyant and innovative man, noticed this method resulted in wasted time and man hours, so he came up with an unheard-of solution.  This solution would revolutionize the entire grocery industry:  he developed a way for shoppers to serve themselves.

Despite predictions that this new kind of store would fail, the first Piggly Wiggly opened September 6, 1916 at 79 Jefferson Street in Memphis.  Operating under the unusual name Piggly Wiggly, it was unlike any other grocery store of that time.  Shopping baskets, open shelves, no clerks to shop for the customer -- unheard of!!!

HISTORY OF YOUR LOCAL PIG

In June 1985, Johnny & Patricia Garrett opened their first store (Garrett's IGA) in Brundidge, Alabama.  That following February, they opened the store on N. Three Notch Street in Troy, Alabama.  For 20 years, the Garrett family served Pike County as Garrett's IGA.  In the fall of 2005, the name was changed to Garrett Foods, and the IGA franchise was dropped.  A few months later, both stores joined the Piggly Wiggly franchise family.  In November 2009, Steve & Jennifer C. Garrett purchased the third location on Highway 231 S. in the Troy Marketplace Shopping Center.  In January 2013, Steve & Jennifer C. Garrett purchased the N. Three Notch Street location from his parents.  Several years before, Stanley & Jennifer W. Garrett bought the Brundidge location.  In 2012, the deli was separated and owned and operated by Yanni & Denise Tempelis as The Pig Cafe which has now been moved to The Market on the Square.
